Behavioural Analytics
See who comes back, and when they stop.
Group people by when they arrived or what they first did, then watch each cohort's curve. A drop attached to a group of people is something you can investigate; a drop attached to a month is not.
Retention
How many users come back, by first-seen week.
Average retention curve
Cohorts by first-seen week
Curves, not a single number
A retention percentage hides when people leave. The curve shows you whether it is day one, week two or the second renewal.
Cohorts you can act on
Split by acquisition week, platform or the first thing someone did, and the difference between the groups is the lead.
Still investigable later
By the time a curve visibly bends, the cause is weeks old. The sessions behind it are still there.
What Retention & Cohorts does
Build the cohort
Group by the things that actually differ between people who stay and people who do not.
- Acquisition week or month
- Platform — web, iOS or Android
- First action taken, so activation quality is separable from volume
Read the curve
Retention week over week and month over month, with cohorts overlaid so a change is visible against a baseline.
- Week-over-week and month-over-month retention
- Compare cohorts directly rather than against an average
- Spot the shelf where a cohort stops declining and settles
Find out why
A cohort is a set of real people, and every one of them has sessions attached.
- Drop from a cohort into the individual sessions inside it
- Cross-reference against the errors and crashes those sessions hit
- Survey a fading cohort while some of them are still opening the product
Better with the rest of it
Every module reads the same identity, events and sessions, so an investigation that starts here does not have to be rebuilt to continue somewhere else.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a returning user?
A user who starts a new session in a later period than the one they were first seen in. Sessions resolve by identity where the user has identified, and by visitor id before that.
Can I retain on something other than 'opened the app'?
Yes — a cohort can be built on a first action, so you can measure retention of people who completed onboarding rather than everyone who arrived.
How far back can I look?
Retention history is bounded by your data retention window, which is configurable on Enterprise. The curve is computed from the sessions you have kept.
